Salthawk Center Volunteer Student Internship

We are excited to begin the process of selecting our credit union volunteer student interns for the 2019/2020 school year! Hutchinson High School and Heartland Credit Union have partnered together to create this program in order to support student financial literacy and workforce readiness education. As an applicant for the volunteer internship program at the Salthawk Center, you will be required to turn in all the items listed below by the deadline. Once all the materials are collected, we will contact selected applicants for an interview with HHS and Heartland staff. Not all applicants will be granted an interview. Interviews will be held during school hours. Please keep in mind this is a significant commitment. Interns will work at the Salthawk Center Monday Friday during designated times.

Interns will also be expected to complete financial literacy courses and may even be asked to help teach these courses to fellow students. Summer training will be necessary in order to prepare student interns for working at the branch. Be prepared to be available for training from Monday, August 10 - Wednesday, August 19, 2020. We will provide more details regarding the exact schedule.

Branch hours of operation will be as follows: Monday Friday: 7:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. when school is in session.

Required Items

  • Review attached program overview and position description.
  • Complete the online Salthawk Internship Application
    • Upload your resume with your online application We understand students may not have work experience to include. Include in/out school activities, leadership, achievements and any work experience.
  • Upload with application or return printed copies to Mrs. Lusk or Mrs. Patterson:
    • Attach copy of high school transcript.
    • Attach current attendance printout.
  • Make sure you have at least two (students can ask for more) Teacher Recommendation Forms turned in. Teachers providing these should submit them directly to Mrs. Lusk or Mrs. Patterson.

Application submission and all required documents are due by March 19th.

Philosophy

The Financial Foundations Program is an extension of our credit union philosophy. At Heartland Credit Union, education is at the core of our organization. Founded as the Hutchinson Teachers Credit Union in 1948, our focus is always on the people we serve because they aren't just numbers to us: they are our neighbors, friends, and family. We are here to help them succeed.

Program Purpose

The Financial Foundations student internship program is an innovative approach to business and financial literacy education. It allows students to learn the basic principles and practices of the financial services industry while obtaining real-world, on-the-job experience.

The program offers students an opportunity to learn, participate, and work with confidence alongside credit union professionals. The training provided by Heartland staff will include, but is not limited to, financial operations, cash handling skills, member service skills and workforce readiness skills.

The experience and education provided to the students in this program will result in:

  • Young adults better equipped to handle future financial responsibilities.
  • A deeper understanding of personal financial well-being and financial institution operations.
  • Development of soft skills including providing quality member/customer service.
  • On-the-job experience for future employment.
  • Develop employability skills through work experience.
  • Develop positive work habits and communication skills.
  • Make the adjustment from school to employment easier.
  • Will receive school credit for participation.

The Financial Foundations student internship program is a unique way for students to learn in his/her school environment while gaining an insider's view of the financial services industry. Each student will be taught the basics of teller operations and member service following the same training format as Heartland staff.

The student will begin to develop job skills that include:

  • Cash handling
  • Member service skills
  • Computer skills
  • Financial operations
  • Communication skills
  • Member service
  • Financial compliance
  • Confidentiality

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift 30 lbs. occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. frequently.
  • Standing for extended periods of time.
