Thank you for your interest in the Salthawk Center Volunteer Student Internship Program!

The Salthawk Center is a fully functional Heartland Credit Union branch located in Hutchinson High School! Through the program, volunteer student interns have the opportunity to gain work experience and valuable financial literacy knowledge during school hours. Hutchinson High School and Heartland Credit Union have partnered together to create this program in order to support student financial literacy and workforce readiness education.

We are excited to begin the process of selecting our volunteer student interns for the 2026/2027 school year!

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
Students must be either a junior or senior, at Hutchinson High School for the 2026/2027 school year. Selected interns will be expected to complete financial literacy courses and present on the topics to classmates. Interns will work at the Salthawk Center, during the school year, during designated times.

Summer training will be necessary in order to prepare student interns for working at the branch. Interns must also be available for summer training from Friday, August 7th, 2026 – Wednesday, August 12, 2026 . We will provide more details regarding the exact schedule.

Branch hours of operation will be as follows: Monday Friday: 7:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. when school is in session.

Required Items
As an applicant for the volunteer student internship program at the Salthawk Center, students are required to turn in all the items listed below by the deadline. Once all the materials are collected, we will contact selected applicants for an interview with HHS and Heartland staff. Not all applicants may be granted an interview. Interviews will typically be held during school hours. Please keep in mind, the program is a significant commitment.

To complete the internship application:

• Pick up an application packet from Mrs. Lusk Room T101, or Leslie Shea, Salthawk Center
• Complete the online Salthawk Internship Application:
  • Uploading a resume is OPTIONAL with your online application We understand students may not have a resume at this time. 
• Upload with application or return printed copies to Mrs. Lusk or Leslie Shea:
  • Copy of your current high school transcript.
  • Copy of your current attendance printout.
• Make sure to have at least two (students can ask for more) Teacher Recommendation Forms turned in. Recommendation Forms are the Internship Application Packet. Teachers providing these should submit them directly to Mrs. Lusk or Leslie Shea.
  

Application submission and all required documents are due by April 10th.

Program OVERVIEW

The Salthawk Center student internship program is a unique way for students to learn in their school environment while gaining an insider's view of the financial services industry. Before entering the program, students are taught the basics of teller operations and member service following the same training format as Heartland staff. It allows students to learn the basic principles and practices of the financial services industry while obtaining real-world, on-the-job experience. The training provided by Heartland staff will include, but is not limited to, financial operations, cash handling, customer service and workforce readiness skills.

The experience and education provided to the students in this program will result in:

• Young adults better equipped to handle future financial responsibilities.
• A deeper understanding of personal financial well-being and financial institution operations.
• Development of soft skills including providing quality member/customer service.
• On-the-job experience for future employment.
• School credit for participation.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Standing for extended periods of time.
